STREB Emerging Artist Commissioning Program Request for Proposals

DEADLINE: All proposals must be received by September 24, 2010

STREB is pleased to request proposals for its Emerging Artist Commissioning Program funded by the Ford Foundation, the Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts. The Commissioning Program, housed at the company’s Williamsburg home, SLAM, will accept proposals from emerging artists whose work is movement-based, including choreographers, aerialists and circus artists. We define “emerging artists” as artists who have been creating work for less than 5 years. Also, artists may not be funded more than twice through this program. The goal of the program is to create a pool of artists who can capitalize on the resources distinct to SLAM so that, either literally or conceptually, the space’s special and unusual characteristics and qualities inform and inspire new and exciting creative experiments. Commissioning program will offer selected artists various opportunities to showcase work throughout its development process and to receive feedback from both STREB and audiences. Selected artists will receive a monetary grant plus a specific amount of time, space and resources tailored to the nature and scope of each particular project.

Eligibility and Selection Process :

Applicants are asked to complete the following application materials:
a) Download and complete the Application Form
b) Submit a work sample on DVD
c) A one-paragraph project description
d) A one-paragraph statement indicating why they are interested in developing their work at an Extreme Action Laboratory, ie SLAM.
Please view our website www.streb.org for more information about our organization.

Following the receipt of all application materials, the materials will be forwarded to a jury of panelists who will advice Elizabeth Streb on making the final commissioning artists decisions. Notification will be sent in early October. Selected artist will be allotted a four-month work period between October 15, 2010 – February 15, 2011 to develop their project with an opportunity to showcase works-in-progress in January and an Emerging Artist’s Commissioning Showcase in March 2011. Final selections of completed work will be included in the Spring SLAM Show, April – May 2011. All applicants must reside in either New York City or Minnesota.
