HISTORY
In January 2003, STREB moved into a vacant former loading facility of the Old Dutch Mustard Company, transforming 51 North 1st Street into the STREB LAB FOR ACTION MECHANICS (SLAM). Preserving its open dimensions—24-foot ceilings and a 50′ x 100′ footprint—and industrial character, the space now houses the company’s school, a 150-seat performance venue, rehearsal studios, trapeze rig, and administrative offices. Since opening, SLAM has become a vibrant gathering place for creative exchange among kids, dancers, gymnasts, circus artists, and the surrounding community—a space for experimentation that is fully public, all the time.
With support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York City Council, the Mayor’s Office, and the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office, the company purchased SLAM in November 2007.
